THE RAT PACK, HOLLYWOOD MAFIA
July 26th 2008 22:52
In the 1950's to mid 1960's a group of Hollywood entertainers got together to make movies, play Vegas, reek havoc, and take care of business. The leader of the gang was Frank Sinatra and pals Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop completed the line up.
The boys got their name from actress Lauren Bacall who when seeing them return home after a night of partying said "You look like a goddamn rat pack." Judy Garland also played a part in the legend of the Rat Pack with the boys spending many nights at her and husband Sid Luft's home in Holmby Hills, also known as the "Holmby Hills Rat Pack."
In the sixties the boys spent time performing at The Sands in Vegas, all five up on stage, smoking, singing, drinking and cracking jokes, about Sammy being black and politics as Rat Packer Peter Lawford was brother in law to then president John F Kennedy. Onstage, Dean Martin drank water, pretending to be boozing it up on Vodka, he thought being drunk would slow him down jumping on a wise crack.
There were girls in the gang too and these girls were'nt just there to please the boys (if you know what I mean), these girls could hold their own and The Rat Pack loved a tough broad.
Marilyn Monroe, Angie Dickinson, Juliet Prowse, and Shirley MacLaine were often referred to as the "Rat Pack Mascots" and were considered one of the boys. The Las Vegas act opened up doors for the boys making a few movies, among them Oceans Eleven 1960. Ring a bell? Clooney ripped that one off Frank.
The Sands hotel and Vegas itself became the place to be because of the Rat Pack and to this day Las Vegas owes its famous line "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" to The Rat Pack.
But there was another side. Frank Sinatra loved being a friend of John Kennedy and acted as his pimp for years supplying one woman after another including Marilyn Monroe. Kennedy and Monroe would meet at Peter Lawfords house for their trysts, so convenient considering Kennedy and Lawford were related. There are rumours to this day, that when Kennedy was campaining to be president, he knew he would have difficulty in some states and needed the votes of those people. The story goes that Frank contacted a few friends of his including Sam Giancana, who also happened to be The Mafia and arranged for them to get Kennedy the votes as long as Kennedy when in office left the mob boys to their business and did not interefere. Kennedy agreed, but on becoming president little brother Bobby became Attorney General and decided in his wisdom to chase down the mob bosses including Sam Giancana. And so began the downfall of the President and his assassination was inevitable as was the demise of the Rat Pack.
Joey Bishop, was the last Rat Pack member to die on October 17, 2007. I have no doubt these guys have hooked up in heaven and are working a huge venue singing, laughing and drinking, and I don't think God would have it any other way.
