LUPE VELEZ THE ORIGINAL B-GRADE STARLET

July 13th 2008 01:22
Lupe Velez
In the mid 1930's and early 1940's Lupe Velez was on the B-list. Born in Mexico in 1908, Lupe was desperate to be a star, not an actress, a star, and acting was the vechile she intended to use to be super famous. In1924 with a dream in her pocket, Lupe moved to California and gave Hollywood a shot.

Her first feature length film was The Gaucho 1927,with the heart throb of her day Douglas Fairbanks's and landing a part against Fairbanks must have given young Lupe the impression she was on her way. But typecasting came into play for Lupe who's exotic looks meant she was only cast in small roles as the movies did not often call for a mexican/spanish type look.
But Lupe had a trick up her sleeve as she was a natural comedienne and roles with Laurel and Hardy in Hollywood Party 1934, and with superstar comic Jimmy Durante in Palooka 1934, meant Lupe Velez was becoming a household name, or was she?
Lupe had a filthy temper and was nicknamed the 'mexican spitfire', and not unlike many starlets today, Lupe slowly destroyed her reputation by behaving badly. The spitfire was promiscous and in 1945 that was a one way ticket to loserville. Lupe's career was more focused on her antics than her acting and she struggled to forge a movie career being cast in B-grade flicks and discounted by studio bosses because she was too difficult, and her behaviour unprofessional. She even gave Broadway a shot and bombed.

Lupe had been married to Tarzan actor Johnny Weismuller and had many affairs with some very famous married men including Gary Cooper.
In 1944 Lupe found herself pregnant to her lover Harald Maresch who she loved, but unfortunately Harald did not feel the same. Faced with the fate of having an illegitimate child Lupe begged her lover to marry her and he refused. Lupe decided to take matters into her own hands. On December 12, 1944, Lupe invited some girfriends over for a hot tomali dinner and after her guests had left, Lupe retired to her bed in a silk negligee with a bottle of heavy duty sleeping pills. She left a note "To Harald, may God forgive you and forgive me too but I prefer to take my life away and our baby's before I bring him with shame or killing him, Lupe."
She downed the bottle of pills and fell asleep with a crucifix on her chest saying good bye to the world. Lupe did not count on the pills colliding with the heavy mexican spices in her dinner and she was awoken sometime during the night, vomiting violently. Somehow she managed to get herself to the golden toilet in her expensive marble bathroom, vomiting all the way, slipping and sliding in the contents of her stomach. Once in the bathroom and desperately searching for the toilet, Lupe slipped in her regurgitated enchiladas, and tripped smashing her head on the toilet and fell in face first. In the morning her secretary followed the trail of vomit to find Lupe drowned in the toilet. And so Lupe Velez was finally famous but for all the wrong reasons.
